It is safest to prune Oak trees during the dormant season. Experienced arborists have an easier time distinguishing limbs that are partially alive from those that are dead. Pruning Oaks is best completed in February through early March although any time from December through early March is good timing. Risking a tree wound with a winter pruning is overall a better choice than pruning dead limbs during the growing season.
